Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin on TV Guide's front cover

Stephen Moyer believes that when it comes to true love, all the mayhem is manageable. “I can’t get into slinging matches about who’s better for Sookie becasue it’s just ridiculous,” he laughs. “Bill is for Sookie, the love of her life.”

Steve makes a good case for why on a moonless night in an outdoor scene that will air in the August 8th episode. Without revealing too much, Bill’s ready to fight Russell, the King of Mississippi, who has put Bill’s progeny in danger. Bill’s all passion and protectiveness and definitely someone you want in your corner – or any room of the house.

True Blood in Texas: Stephen Moyer Gives Us a Taste

As brooding vampire Bill Compton, British actor Stephen Moyer is right at the center of the bloodthirsty buzz surrounding HBO’s hit True Blood (Sundays at 10 p.m./ET). Not a bad place to be, right?

Not so fast. Moyer’s character virtually disappears in the third of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, on which the show is based. And while series creator Alan Ball is clearly creating his own path (see the non-death of Book 1 casualty Lafayette on the show), shouldn’t Moyer worry a little? Nah.

“That gives Alan the opportunity to invent something,” Moyer tells TVGuide.com. “Just like last season with the V trips — they had to invent that. And they’re very good at it. So I’m confident that however they keep him there, they’ll make Bill’s story interesting.”

That’s not to say his arc this season hasn’t given him plenty to sink his teeth into. Bill’s playing daddy to a newborn bloodsucker, while also trying to keep afloat his turbulent relationship with Sookie (Anna Paquin), who is increasingly being eyed by Bill’s sheriff, Eric (Alexander Skarsgard). Moyer promises that the road trip to Texas will reveal much more about who Eric was (and is) and further flesh out the vampire world.

“Toward the end of the season, we’re going to see the hierarchy taken almost to its peak,” he says. “We’re going to meet the monarchy, if you will. Last year, we met the grand judge of Louisiana, and this year we’re going to meet the monarch of Texas. But he’s not the monarch of America. It’s kind of an almost feudal system. I love the idea of this incredibly detailed society in which manners are very important as to how you relate to people that are above you.

“As much as Eric does to piss Bill off, Bill never has a childlike fit,” Moyer continues. “The hierarchy is incredibly strong. So no matter how much Eric does against Bill, Bill will never bad-mouth him. It’s sort of an elevated playground mentality. However horrible a kid is to you, you don’t go and report him.”

Even if that horrible kid is moving in on your girlfriend/midnight snack? “What I think is interesting is the love triangle — giving your characters conflict is always much more interesting to watch than suddenly making Sookie and Eric have a relationship,” Moyer says, noting that Bill and Sookie can’t — and shouldn’t — always be happy together.

“You can’t watch two characters be happy in love for 12 episodes,” Moyer says. “That would be extremely dull. I do know that [a separation is] going to happen. The writers will do what’s best for the show. And who’s to say they won’t create a character for Bill to love? I’d love to be a fly on the wall in the writers’ room.”

It’s evident in every anecdote the actor tells that he adores the show and his character. Moyer giddily cackles at the mere thought of an upcoming plot twist he can’t bring himself to spoil. “You wait, you wait,” he laughs. “You won’t believe it.”

Stephen’s Romance Based on Food, Ultimate Honesty

In this recent interview with Redbook, Stephen tells about his romance with Anna, what makes it work, and why we’re all so fascinated with vampires:

Your character, Bill, just got engaged to his love Sookie, and you’re also engaged to Anna Paquin, the actress who plays Sookie, in real life. When did you know Anna was “the one”?
It was when I was away from her. When we were filming the pilot, we were the only two actors who didn’t live in Los Angeles, so we ended up going to dinner almost every night. When we finished filming, I went to London and she went to New York, and it felt so weird not to talk to her. So we began Skyping and have been together ever since!

What is your onscreen chemistry like?
Everybody on set now gets to see what goes on behind closed doors. We leave nothing to the imagination! [Laughs] But our love scenes actually work really well. Since the crew knows we do have chemistry and are together in real life, I feel like it takes away from the nerve-racking tension that can occur when people have to watch two actors who are just getting to know each other engage in an intimate scene.

Why do people love vampires so much? Any vampire tricks that real guys can use to sweep women off their feet?
Vampires are so old that they don’t need to impress anyone anymore. They’re comfortable in their own skin. It’s this enigmatic strength that’s very romantic and old-fashioned. I think it goes back to something of a Victorian attitude of finding a strong man who’s going to look after his woman. Bill represents the kind of guy who is bad and dark, but ultimately, he’ll defend you with his life if it comes to it.

How do you romance your fiancée?
Our romance is based on some really great food and great restaurants and a similar taste in music. We share a lot of things. We live by the beach, and often when it’s 10 o’clock at night, we’ll walk out with the dogs and a drink and sit on the beach. It’s one of our favorite things to do.

So what have you learned about women from Anna?
You know, men would much rather run away than talk about stuff, and my default setting has always been, If you have an argument, walk out the door. Anna’s brilliant: She won’t let me walk away. Instead, we talk and we try to get things out in the open. The main thing that Anna has taught me is absolute transparency and honesty and truth. Even if you know that what you’ll say will hurt a woman’s feelings, I’ve learned that it’s better to be truthful with her than it is to cover up. Ultimate honesty is what a relationship is really about.

Stephen Talks to Rachael Ray About Nude Scenes, Fake Blood

Stephen Moyer appears in “Every Day With Rachael Ray” magazine this month.

A vampire’s diet may seem simple, but keeping an otherworldly figure is a bit more of a challenge, reveals ‘True Blood’ heartthrob Stephen Moyer.

“I just shot a nudie scene for the third season of ‘True Blood,’ and when I have those, I don’t eat for, like, 13 days beforehand,” the actor tells Rachel Ray in the new issue of her magazine, Every Day With Rachael Ray.

Like his character, Bill Compton’s preference for monotonous meals, Moyer can’t complain when it’s time to whip out his fangs.

“When I drink ‘blood’ on the show, it’s actually sieved raspberries blended with a little bit of pomegranate juice,” he says. “Not a bad deal: Drink your girlfriend’s blood and be healthy, too.”

Off-screen, Moyer is engaged to his ‘True Blood’ co-star Anna Paquin, who recently came out as bisexual in while filming a PSA for the ‘Give a Damn’ campaign, which promotes equal rights for LGBT individuals. The British actor says that Paquin indulges his fondness for curry, which he misses from his days living in London. “Anna loves Indian food as well, so we’ve been searching for a good restaurant, but they can’t compare to the ones in the U.K.,” he said.

So, other than the residents of Bon Temps, who would Vampire Bill want to have for dinner? Moyer says his ideal guest lists would include Paquin, Jack Kerouac to read poetry, Thelonious Monk to play piano and Sarah Vaughan to sing, because when you’re a vampire, it’s no big deal when half of your dinner guests are dead.

Stephen Moyer Interview by Rachael Ray – July 2010

RACHAEL RAY: Thanks for letting us into your trailer, Stephen. Looks like a cool place to hang out between scenes. So, I see jam, chutney and Marmite in your fridge. Are they your go-to snacks?
STEPHEN MOYER: Yeah, Marmite is my little English touch, and I’m crazy for chutneys. When I find good ones, I buy two—one goes home and one comes here. In London I had pear trees in my back garden, so I’d make my own pear and green tomato chutney.

RR: Sounds delish! Can you share the recipe?
SM: It was more like a classic savory marmalade, but it was so good. I added raisins, brown sugar and vinegar and just boiled it for hours and hours until it was nice and sticky. I served it with cheese, ham and bread. Wow, talking about it has made me quite hungry. I’m reaching for the jar as we speak.

RR: Eating is always encouraged when you’re around me. So who cooks at home—you or your fiancée, Anna Paquin?
SM: We both take it on, actually, which is great. When my daughter is staying with us, we cook and eat dinner together every night around 6 p.m. I didn’t really do that when I lived in England, but people eat earlier in America, and I like it.

RR: What do you miss most from your days in London?
SM: Curry! Anna loves Indian food as well, so we’ve been searching for a good restaurant, but they can’t compare to the ones in the U.K. In California, we’ve got great Thai restuarants, and Mexican, of course. There is a roadside Mexican place nearby, and they do a killer shrimp burrito with avocado and cilantro. Now I’m really getting hungry. I’m going in for more chutney.

RR: Do they feed you over there, Stephen?
SM: We have crazy filming hours, so my clock is a bit off. And I just shot a nudie scene for the third season of True Blood, and when I have those, I don’t eat for, like, 13 days beforehand. That’s probably why I can’t stop eating now. I just got back from the farmers’ market and basically bought out the entire place.

RR: I’m the same way: I could spend hours, shopping around the farmers’ market. Now tell me about the little lady in your fridge.
SM: That’s Grammy Pickles. She goes everywhere with me, and I photograph her in different situations. Since I’m doing this story with you, I decided she needed a spot in the fridge.

RR: Glad you could both be in the magazine! Aside from Grammy Pickles, who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
SM: Well, after Anna, I’d ask Jack Kerouac to read poetry out loud and Thelonious Monk to play piano. I’d also want somebody to sing…let’s go with Sarah Vaughan.

RR: Weren’t you in a band when you were younger? You could sing!
SM: Yes, I was in a band, but I’m not singing. I’m eating.

SM Styling in Marchon Eyeglasses

Stephen in Marchon eyeglasses

Here’s a little treat from the VisionMonday news site:

Stephen Moyer plays 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton in the HBO hit series “True Blood.” Art seems to imitate life as the classically trained British actor is currently engaged to Anna Paquin, who plays his character’s love interest, Sookie Stackhouse, on the show. But that is where the comparisons between the two end. Moyer, a mere mortal, can’t claim the preternatural senses of his vampire alter-ego and must in real life rely on the help of a pair of glasses for perfect vision. Luckily Marchon has provided the actor with a stylish pair in the form of the Nautica N8042.
